Lots of fun talking about these details, but the biggest question we have, “Did Jackson do his video just so Al would have something to parody?”

The song that made Al the “Eat It Guy”. The lead single from the In 3-D album, this song showed the world that Al wasn’t done, or gone, from the comedy music scene. The first of two Jackson parodies, this song is probably what anyone from the 80s thinks of when you mention Weird Al. This song also came with a video that was a spot on parody, almost scene by scene, of Jackson’s video. Al claims not to know how to dance, but copies Jackson’s moves better then I could.

Charles Nelson Reilly was a bigger then life celebrity in the later half of the 20th century who was a regular on Match Game and the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson with a cult following. Al’s take on him is an amusing exaggeration of the man, living up to his mythic style.

One of the more unique original songs by Al because there is no obvious style or music he’s copying. Nathan Rabin described it as the “Al’s version of the adorably cloying, clamorous, dance-hall style ditties Paul McCartney wrote solely to irritate John Lennon”. Like Mission Statement it’s just a bunch of cliche lines that people in the business would say in California back in the 80s.

Al borrows again from hip hop to create a song dedicated to cleaning up the house. As a kid I used to read the Shel Silverstein poem Sarah Silvia Cynthia Stout and this song reminds me a lot of it. The best parts are when you know the original song and what Al does with it in the parody.

Al seems to really enjoy REM. On an AlTV he talked over the video of Losing My Religion which was also in Polka Your Eyes Out. On another AlTV he “interviewed” Michael Stipe. Then he took a line from the interview and created the concert only song, “We All Have Cell Phones”. He’s even done a REM style parody with “Frank’s 2000″ TV”. So it’s not a surprise he took their hit Stand and turned into a song about food.

Luckily there are a lot of things to say about Spam, that delicious pig treat in a can. And heck, who doesn’t like trending over old Monty Python bits.

Al’s breakout video from UHF (and sometimes I feel like the whole reason the movie was made) is this great spot on video parody of Dire Straits Money For Nothing (cutting edge animation at the time). Al mashes it up with the Theme to Beverly Hillbillies (something he had tried in the past) to create this surreal song that just works (better then those other times). Mark Knopfler (guitar) and Guy Fletcher (synth) even join the band for this song (they were both from Dire Straits).

Pretty Fly for a Rabbi (Parody of Pretty Fly for a White Guy by The Offspring)

A while back a fan said to Al that his voice sometimes sounded like Dexter Holland, the lead singer of The Offspring. Al agreed and thought he should do a parody of one of their songs. First he turned to Come Out and Play (Keep ‘Em Separated) for Bad Hair Day but that didn’t come to pass, so the next chance he had was Pretty Fly For A White Guy.

Al uses his entire English to Yiddish dictionary in this loving tribute to a Rabbi who’s just the best. He’s joined by South Park star Mary K Bergman and old friend Tress MacNeille.

So he asked for permission and he was told they wanted to see the lyrics. So he did that and they said they wanted to hear it. So he recorded it. Then they said no, so Al went to the internet. His fans rose up. Lady Gaga finally responded saying she hadn’t even heard about it and that Al could do it. Al’s album drops when it’s supposed to because it has a big, super current single.

The video is the title sequence for the movie Spy Hard, but in video releases has sometimes missed the titles and sometimes even had the swimming women edited out. This whole section has been super important songs in Al’s oeuvre. This song, his second major hit, is another one that makes Al Al. It also is probably more remembered then his original to non fans because the hit it parodies is more popular then the Knack’s hit.

Recorded live on September 14th 1980 on air during the Dr. Demento show, this song is also the first time Jon Bermuda Schwartz plays drums for Al, a thing he still does today. This song is Al’s second single, both on an EP from Placebo Records, and later on a single from TK Records (where it was the last single they published).

Sports Song

The song was one of those released as part of 8 days of videos hyping Mandatory Fun back in 2014. This video was presented by Funny or Die and stars the Riverside City College Tigers’ band.

He might be better known as the “Eat It guy” but for a while he was the “Bologna guy”.

Al had a tv show on Saturday mornings. This was the theme he wrote for it. It feels a lot like a shorter version of Albuquerque and it’s chuck full of classic Weird Al references.
